Today, I'm thrilled to share some stunning macro photographs that I, Kesari Babu, captured right here in my hometown, Illanthakunta Mandal. These incredible close-up shots reveal the fascinating world of small insects, often overlooked in our daily lives.

1. Dysdercus cingulatus – The Red Cotton Stainer

English Description:

The Red Cotton Stainer is a medium-sized true bug with a bright red body, black wing marks, and long legs and antennae. Commonly found in cotton fields and gardens, it feeds mainly on cotton seeds and plant juices. It is an important agricultural pest because it damages cotton crops, leaving stains that reduce cotton’s value. When disturbed, it emits an unpleasant odor to repel predators. Despite being a pest, it is also part of the food web, serving as prey to birds and other insectivores.

రక్తపచ్చ పత్తిపురుగు (తిమ్మిపురుగు) పత్తిపంట పొలాలలో, చెట్ల కింద గడ్డి మధ్య ఎక్కువగా కనిపిస్తుంది. ఇది పొడవైన ఎరుపు శరీరం, నలుపు మచ్చలతో ఉంటుంది. పత్తి విత్తనాల నుంచి రసం తాగి తన పోషణం పొందుతుంది. రైతుకి ఇది చాలా ఇబ్బంది కలిగించే పురుగు. ఎవరైనా పట్టుకున్నపుడు సుద్ద వాసన వదులుతుంది, ఇది శత్రువులను దూరంగా ఉంచుతుంది. ఈ పురుగు పక్షులకు తిండిగా మారుతూ అడవి జీవవైవిధ్యానికి తోడ్పడుతుంది.

2. Cleome viscosa & Trombidium holosericeum – Asian Spiderflower & Aaridra Purugu

(పీయ కోరగడ్డ & ఆరిద్ర పురుగు / ఎర్రమెట్టు పురుగు)

English Description:

Cleome viscosa, locally known as Asian Spiderflower or Kanti Manthi, is a tall herb with small yellow flowers and sticky leaves. It thrives in open fields and along roadsides. The bright red velvet mite, Trombidium holosericeum, locally called Aaridra Purugu, is often found on this plant or nearby soil, particularly after rains. This mite preys on small insects and their eggs, playing a vital role in controlling pest populations. The flower provides nectar and pollen that attract various pollinators, supporting biodiversity.

పీయ కోరగడ్డ (కంటిమంతి) పొడి పసుపు పువ్వులు కలిగి ఉండేది పొలాల్లో, పల్లెల మధ్య పెరుగుతుంది. ఆకులు చేతిలో ట్రోర్లు లాంటి అంటుకునే లక్షణం ఉంది. వర్షాల తర్వాత నేలపై, ఆకుల మధ్య కనిపించే ఎర్రమెట్టు పురుగు (ఆరిద్ర పురుగు) చిన్న పురుగులు, వాటి గుడ్లను తినే పక్కగా వ్యవస్థలో కీటక నియంత్రణలో సహాయపడుతుంది. ఈ పేయ మొక్క పుష్పధాన్యం అందించి చీమలు, తేనేట, ఇతర పుష్పాభక్షకులను ఆకర్షిస్తుంది.

Important Note

Contrary to some images, the ఆరిద్ర పురుగు (Aaridra Purugu) does not normally climb plants. For the purpose of the photograph shown here, it was intentionally placed (dropped) on the పీయ కోరగడ్డ plant to capture its appearance.
